Montemayor, M.Ed.Classnotes Podcast (August 18, 2015) The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education declaring segregated schools unconstitutional was an important point in the long battle that had preceded it. IDRA senior education associate, Dr. Bradley Scott, has been engaged in the struggle for several decades and has been able to track the successes and challenges from the 1970s to the present through IDRA’s programmatic work and his leadership.

Six Goals of Education Equity

  • Bradley explains how, more than 60 years after Brown vs. Board of Education, minority students and English learners are still underperforming in public schools, the results of a systemic structural problem that that won’t be solved if we continue to fall back into old ways of thinking.

  • Bradley argues that these problems are not simply the results of poverty but of ongoing biases and prejudices that privilege certain student groups over others.

  • Bradley says that high-poverty, high-minority schools can succeed, when determined educators and communities come together and make smart, tough decisions. He shares a recent example of a Texas superintendent who spearheaded such an effort.

  • Bradley talks about coaching and training support that school districts can provide teachers, helping them to adapt their curriculum to better meet the needs of all their students.
